From Katherine Lee, your Guide to Parenting School Age Children
In this week's Parenting School Age Children Newsletter, as many parents gear up for the start of a new school year, we report on the new AAP recommendation that schools consider sending kids to school even if they have head lice. Also, a new study that shows the benefits of showering your kids with lots of love; the best way to put school anxiety in perspective; and a kids' fever and pain medicine giveaway.

Kids Shouldn't Miss School Because of Lice, Says the AAP
As we head into a new school year, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued a new guideline to treat head lice. Among the new recommendations is the assertion that many schools' current policy of not allowing kids to come to school if they have any signs of lice infestation should be reversed... Read more

From Stephanie Brown, your Guide to Toddlers

On the Forum: Potty Training in Time for a New Baby
Christine says:
"My 19-month-old will be 2 years and 2 months old when my next baby is born. I am 12 weeks pregnant and was wondering if I should start her potty training now so that she will be done by the time the baby comes Also, should I try switching her to a toddler bed somewhere in this mix? Not all at the same time, but some time before the baby comes?"
Have you potty trained a toddler or made the switch to the big bed to make way for a new baby? How did you make it all work? Share your advice (or just commiserate) with Christine and other parents on the forum or leave a comment.

Alphabet Book List
One of my favorites from the list is I Spy Little Letters: "I Spy" books are lots of fun for older kids. They're full of complex pictures where you must find specified objects hidden in a mass of other things. For younger kids, this book is a great introduction to that concept. The authors have placed letters among just a few other objects on the page, so finding them is a task that is at just the right developmental level for your toddler. In addition, this book incorporates the use of rhyme which toddlers both learn from and love.
