Should Parents Ask Their Teens to Lie for Them?
I was struck by this thought last night when watching Pretty Little Liar's Halloween feature because that is what Aria's dad asked her to do after she had seen him with another woman. It was a big mistake for many reasons - viewers of the show all know how that turns out as this special was a prequel. Also, I think it may be why Aria lies to her parents about who she is dating through the next couple of seasons.

When my teen daughter saw the scene, she turned to me and asked, "Would you ask me to lie for you?"

"No way!" I replied. "There wouldn't be a need because I don't run around on your father."

But then I got to thinking about the little white lies or lies of omission I've asked of my kids, like telling them not to mention the broken heater to my father because I just wanted to handle it without bothering him if at all possible, you know what I mean? While lying isn't common practice in our home, I am going to be thinking twice before modeling it to my kids from now on. And no, I don't think parents should ask teens to lie for them, even if it would make life easier. Teaching teens that lying is okay sometimes just sends a mixed message.

Asking our community of parents of teens: Have you ever asked your teen to lie for you? Did it come back to haunt you? What did you think of the Pretty Little Liars Halloween show? Did you and your teen have any other conversations? Please share your thoughts, advice and experiences in the comments area.

Halloween Costume Ideas for Teens
Much of the fun of Halloween is making your own costume. We would have many different activities during Halloween and one usually is a party. I think I had as much fun making up costume ideas with my teens as I did seeing them in costume. See our Halloween Costume Ideas for Teens.

How to Get Your Kids or Teens to Do Their Chores
Getting your kids and teens to do chores is often harder than it should be - at least that is what we think. Our older kids and teens would prefer not to be bothered at all with chores. Who wouldn't, right? But household tasks need to get done. This issue can cause arguments and bad moods around the home more often than parents would like. Here is some advice, opinions and experiences from real parents on how to get kids and teens to do chores, read it and share your tips: How to Get Your Kid or Teen to Do Their Chores.
