Everyday Tactics That Will Encourage Reading

Reading is an important skill that all parents need to encourage their children to master. A person who can read, and read well, is more likely to:

  • graduate from college;
  • get a higher paying job;
  • experience the joys of learning new things;
  • and enjoy the stress-reducing entertainment of a good book.

While it can be harder to turn a teen on to reading than say, a 3-year-old who loves the attention you give when you read him/her a book, it is not anywhere near impossible. Here are a few tried and true tactics you can use to turn your teen into an avid reader.

The Glee Project: Believability.
Was Hannah not believable because of her lack of confidence? Hannah is a beautiful girl with a great personality who did start out with a lack of confidence being her biggest flaw in the beginning of the competition. The other one being her size. Unfortunately, her low confidence level was back last night and she did not make the call back list.

One could argue that Ryan needs to get on board with the rest of the show, however. I think it's disingenuous to put those kids through a homework assignment and a full show on Believability, then only pick 'the most talented' singer at the end of the day. Also, Hannah won the homework, so she got the most up-close face time on the video - easier to find her faults. I believe too that Hannah's size didn't give her any help - not so much when it came to who Ryan was voting for - but it did bring down her confidence level. Nevertheless, my daughters think that next year, the producers should consider placing the winner of the homework assignment directly on the call back list. I agree.

Talking points with your teen: If you liked someone at school, should you tell them? Would you keep liking someone even though they didn't like you? How do you think you should approach someone you want to date, but you don't know them yet?

What did you think of tonight's show? Was it Hannah's time to leave? Is your teen a Hannah fan? Do you think it was her confidence that took her down or something else? Please post your thoughts in our comments area.
