Is the Phoebe Prince bullying case a turning point?
As a parent of teens, I am watching the Phoebe Prince bullying case very closely. But as closely, I'm watching the cycle of interest too. It is very sad when things like this happen, not only for the parents of the victim, but also for our communities which struggle to understand the happenings and reasons, get caught up in the media frenzy and then fail to find the answer for bullying in our own backyard.

Here is a case in point: Out of the hundreds of bullying incidents that can be found by placing the keyword "bullying" in Google News, let's just use this one, Girls Fighting YouTube Videos - Are Mean Girls Getting Meaner? This happened back in April 2008. It was all over the news. Teens beat a girl, taped it and put it on YouTube. While people were charged with a crime and given consequences, there was no call to action for the bigger problem - stopping the bullying when it first starts. But I think with the suicide of Phoebe Prince, there will be.

Has anything been done to remove bullying in the schools in your community? Has your community worked on getting some proactive, effective ways to prevent school violence from happening? In our local community, students take a three day course on bullying and teamwork. But the problem is still there and parents can't help but wonder why the school's administration doesn't do more.

It is my opinion that the problem of bullying in schools lies more in our inability to solve it then it does in the teens who are doing the bullying. I think we are using the wrong tools. My reasoning may seem simple to some, but its sound: You don't hammer a screw. Why are the towns and cities of the United States using educators to handle violence of any kind? Schools need to get together with their local police departments and come up with some type of youth violence task force. Children are dying, it's time to stop thinking of this as just a school problem and use all of our community's resources. Just my two cents... can I have yours? Please feel free to post your opinions, advice and experiences in the comments area.
