Foster Care

From Carrie Craft, your Guide to Adoption
A blog is all about sharing and I hope that there will be understanding when I share the following. We had the placements for about 6 days and I knew very quickly that it was not going well. We chose to disrupt and the children were placed in another home with their two older siblings in a previous foster home. I felt horrible, but better that they were back with siblings in a home they knew.

Toddlers and Preschoolers: Things to Consider for Foster Par
So, you all may remember my blog from a month ago when I shared that we had taken in new foster placements of toddlers. I learned a lot and thought I'd share.

I Became a Foster Parent - Did I Make a Mistake?
Sometimes a difficult foster placement can really make a foster parent question their sanity. Here are some tips and encouragement.

My Interest in Foster Care and Adoption Began When...
When did you first get interested in being a foster parent? We all have our motivations to take action and when it comes to becoming a foster or an adoptive parent, the reasons are varied. I've heard them all, "We knew a child in church," "We feel we have been called by God," "We have so much love to give." Take a moment and share your reason. What motivated you to become a foster parent or an adoptive parent? Finish this sentence: "My interest in foster care and adoption began when..."

Summer with Teens

From Denise Witmer, your Guide to Parenting Teens
As always, I hope this newsletter is finding you and yours happy and in good health.

Water Fun Day with Teens
Have you got a group of teens who are bored? Set up a water fun day! It is really easy, only five simple steps:
  1. Gather the water game supplies.
  2. Let your teen invite friends.
  3. Go over the rules of your house once, don't harp or nag.
  4. Let them play.
  5. Offer some smoothies for snacks.
Water Balloon Volleyball is one of my favorite games for summer fun with teens. You need to buy the more expensive harder-to-break balloons in order to play if you want to play the real volleyball type of game with one "ball", as they last a couple of hits before they break. But for this game, regular water balloons work very well. Here are the directions and more water games for summer fun with teenagers.

About Baby Products: 2 Million Cribs Recalled

Newborns

Infants 3-12 Mos.

Toddlers 1-4 Yrs.

From Heather Corley, your Guide to Baby Products
One mom recently commented, "I'm not big on baby showers for second babies, but now that everything I own has been recalled, I'm reconsidering." It's easy to understand that frustration, since seven crib manufacturers announced recalls this week, affecting more than 2 million cribs. Most are drop-side cribs, but there are a few fixed side cribs included, too.

Budget Cribs Under $200
I know a few parents who are tired of trying to deal with repair kits and recalled cribs, so they're simply buying a new crib. While I can't guarantee that these cribs will never be recalled, they're all fixed side cribs, so the lack of moving parts should help them stay sturdy over time. Best of all, they're under $250, so the new crib won't break the bank.

The Crib is Recalled. Now What?
Many parents are frustrated by crib recalls, because they must find an alternate sleeping location for baby until the crib can be fixed or replaced. Sometimes it takes weeks for a repair kit to arrive. Here's the lowdown on crib recalls to get you through the process as painlessly as possible.

Drop-Side Crib Safety Issues
Changing industry safety standards mean drop-side cribs are on the way out in terms of manufacturing. However, if you already have a drop-side crib, it's good to be aware of potential safety issues that can arise as the crib ages. Historically, drop-side cribs have been less sturdy over time than fixed side cribs.

Evenflo Drop-Side Cribs Recall
Evenflo's crib recall is the largest of those announced this week, affecting about 750,000 cribs. The popular Jenny Lind style crib is the focus of the recall. While you're checking your crib for this recall, be aware that there's a secondary repair kit needed for the mattress support on some Evenflo crib models.
