| | 1 in 2 Teens Are Using Drugs Half, 50%, one in two - that's how many teens today are smoking, drinking or using drugs according to a study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA). The findings, which are based on surveys of 1,000 high school students, 1,000 parents of high school students and 500 school officers, along with expert interviews, focus groups, a literature review of 2,000 scientific articles and an analysis of seven data sets can be found right here on the blog.
The study is being called the most comprehensive look at teen substance use to date. I'd call it a real eye opener. Substance abuse leads to more deaths and serious health issues in teens than anything else. Yet, it is the most preventable when parents and the community of adults around teens take an active approach.
So, let's get that started here. I'm asking our parenting community: What do you do to keep your teen from smoking, off of drugs and not drinking alcohol? What has worked? What hasn't? Do you have a supportive community? Please share your advice in the comments area. | $10 Gas Card from CVS- for Free! | On Switched at Birth: How Important Are Appearances? This week's Switched at Birth episode, Dance Amongst Daggers, was about appearances. It's a great topic to talk to your teen about and has so many implications. When your family is going through a trauma or rough spot, do you feel it is important to keep up appearances for strangers, family or friends? While I do not believe lying is something you should model for your teenagers, I do believe in showing your best face when you are trying to be resilient and unified as a family. I commend the show for covering an issue that isn't black and white.
What did you think? Should the parents be so worried about what other people think? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments area.
