| | Do parents make life too cushy for their teens? NCMike's comment: "One of the common threads I read over and over is that these kids think only about the current moment and live in the current moment and don't think seriously not about the future. And is not like the parents don't try to focus them on the future and work towards it - the kids choose not to. Why is that when, as group, they have so much to look ahead to and live comfortably and secure relative to most others in the world? Maybe that is the root cause; parents make life too cushy at too early an age."
Denise's thoughts: While I'd like to disagree wholeheartedly, I can't. There is quite a bit of truth in that statement. This generation of young adults is being considered entitled with reason. And I have to admit I am guilty of it. I catch myself allowing my teenager to slide on responsibilities because she got a 100% on a test or something like that. I have to remind myself that she still needs to keep her room picked up. I'm sure Einstein's mother made him do his chores as well, right?

Written by the same people who wrote The Vampire Diaries, which is in it's third season, the Secret Circle is a little more for a younger teen crowd than the show it follows on Thursday nights. But not too young! I give it a 15+ rating myself and I'm not about to let my preteen watch it, even if she can see the episodes online at an earlier hour the next day.
The show's premiere, which was on last night and did well at setting the theme and tone in my opinion. Seeing the murder of the main character's parent occur was a little darker than I expected, but then I remembered I was watching the CW network, whom I often find will go darker with their shows. It does bring up a whole line of grief issues to talk to teens about. Otherwise, not too many surprises.

With a mean age of 16½, many of the teens had started smoking by the age of 12. They were a addicted to the unhealthy habit both physically and through the social acceptance of their peers. This is part of what makes quitting smoking so difficult of teens.
Students were randomly assigned to one of three groups: - one group got a single smoking cessation session;
- a second group got a more intensive, 10-week stop-smoking program known as Not On Tobacco (NOT);
- and a third received a combination of the anti-tobacco group and fitness education.
More about the study - links on the blog. I find the study to be well done and hope that these findings are used in the most positive of ways as soon as possible.
