Save Money When Buying a Car for Your Teen
A car is one of the biggest purchases a teen or young adult will make - most likely with your help. I know it took some time and a lot of research when we took the plunge and got my daughter her first car. You can save some money when you and your teen make this purchase with these tips:
  1. Buy secondhand. First cars tend to get banged up and abused by their new owners. Secondhand cards are a much more affordable risk. That isn't even taking into account that secondhand cars are generally thought of as a better financial deal.
  2. Take a notebook with you when you go to look at cars. Write down who you've talked to, the car make and model, how much they are asking and the Vin number.
  3. Research. Check the blue book value and the Carfax(link on blog) of the car.
  4. Ask a mechanic friend to test drive any car that you are considering buying. Any major work that needs to be done can usually be found by a mechanic. This tip can save you thousand of dollars on fixing a transmission two months after you purchase your teen a car.
  5. Don't be afraid to walk away from a deal that makes you uncomfortable. There are more deals out there and your teen will find another that they like better.
