Teens Start Smoking After Seeing Cigarette Ads, Surprising?
In a study that will be published in the February issue of Pediatrics, 277 teens who had never smoked before took up the habit after viewing tobacco advertising. The study, which involved more than 2,100 public school students in Germany, showed the teens 12 ads with branding removed. Six of the ads were for cigarettes and six for other products, including candy, cars and cell phones. They were asked to identify the product advertised and recall the brand if they could. Nine months later, 13% of the teens who had seen tobacco ads began smoking, showing a strong connection between the behavior and tobacco advertising.

Denise's thoughts: So, cigarette ads targeted at teens actually work. Interesting. Isn't that what advertising is supposed to do? It is what marketing is all about: You see an ad -> makes the product look good to you -> you use the product. Why would we think teens are any different?

Asking the community of parents: What did you think of the study? What study would you like to see done concerning teens and tobacco? Please share your thoughts, opinions and experiences in the comments area.

Teen Sexting Laws: Don't Mess Up Their Future
GuestU gave his opinion on Teen Sexting Laws: "If a teen is sending nude pictures to a boyfriend/girlfriend then they were either peer pressured into it or did it out of love. There is so much peer pressure now a days when it comes to teens. Having a felony on their record is to much. Getting prison time is way overboard. I think that a child should have a fine or have community service for what they did. If the law calls them minors then they don't need to be charged with adult charges! Teens may not realize the consequence until it's to late. I think they should have more sex education at school to help the teens realize that it isn't right for them to do it. Girls are at higher risk of doing it. Guys will just receive them and maybe even forward them. Serious consequences are too strict. They need to hurry up and change that."
