| | This week, rotavirus is making its way through child care centers, there's a crib recall and an offer from a major toy retailer: They will take your old, possibly unsafe gear and give you a discount on new stuff. | | Rotavirus: How Long Must Toddlers Stay Home from Child Care? Many readers wonder how long they need to keep their toddler home from child care after he comes down with rotavirus. Much of this depends on your state's guidelines. Some states have no specific guidelines while others require child care providers to submit stool samples of children and staff who may be affected. In addition, some unlicensed caregivers like home providers or neighborhood sitters may have no guidelines at all. While this can be good for the parent who wants to get back to work and thinks that their toddler is on the mend, be aware that a child can spread the illness to others for as many as 12 days. Returning too soon can put others at risk. | Land of Nod Recalls Cribs and Toys R Us Trade-In Event Photo © CPSC More drop-side cribs are being recalled due to possible hardware failure which can lead to falls and suffocation or strangulation. There have been 13 reports of this type of failure (out of just 300 cribs) but luckily no injuries. To get your $599 merchandise credit or learn more about this crib, give Land of Nod a call at 800-933-9904, send them an email, or visit their site. There are just so many reasons not to have a drop-side crib these days. Toy retailer Toys R Us is no longer even carrying them and from now until Feb. 21 they will take your old items and give you a discount toward new items during their "Trade-In Event." So, even if it hasn't been recalled, drag your old or hand-me-down used cribs, car seats, bassinets, strollers, travel systems, play yards, high chairs and toddler beds for a 25% discount on some new gear. Then again, I was talking to a friend about this program the other day and she pointed something out to me, saying: "If I had a drop-side crib, why would I take it there for a small discount when there's a chance that that item will be recalled in the future and I could get a complete refund or free replacement? I can just buy a safer crib now and then store the old one and use the money if I get a refund or sell the new replacement crib on eBay or Craigslist." And that does make sense. Just make sure your child has a safe place to sleep in the meantime. The best exchange I could see would be to take your old crib in and exchange it for a discounted toddler bed (if the time is right). | Meet Yuna on Her First Birthday | | | | | Toddlers Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | | | Sign up for more free newsletters on your favorite topics | | | | You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to the About Toddlers newsletter.
