Social Media in High School, Should Teens Have Access?
I've recently had a couple of conversations with parents who would like their teen's school to turn off the ability to use social networks during school - or on any laptop that the school provides. While, I can sympathize with the grief social networks can cause a parent of a teenager, I can't agree with forcing schools to the extreme of shutting down all access to social media. And here is three reasons why I feel that way:
  1. The school isn't capable of doing it, there really is no way to block it all. Therefore, they can't be culpable.
  2. A high school's first priority is the education of the teens within its walls. Using social media to teach is becoming a norm that has benefits. For instance, my daughter was able to ask her teacher a question about homework and get an answer in five minutes. Without this ability, she would have had to ask the next day and missed getting her assignment in on time.
  3. Parents, social media, just like any other teen social outlet, is your responsibility. If you want your teen to stay off of Facebook or Skype, then you have to set the rules that way.
Asking our community of parents: Should schools allow students to use social networking during school hours? Please share your thoughts, experiences and opinions in the comments area and weigh in on our poll!
