Should Young Teens See the Hunger Games Movie
It is always important for a parent of young teens, 11 to 14-year-olds, to step back and think about the movies and books we allow them to read and see. When parents are considering The Hunger Games movie, they need to take that moment of thought even one step further. Parents of preteens and young teens should start a conversation with them about the violence, the themes - war ravaged world where kids kill kids for the entertainment of the oppressors - and not miss sharing your family values on war issues and possibly even talk about history. My 17-year-old and I talk a bit about Nazi Germany and the Roman Empire when we were discussing the book. When parents have this type of conversation - as opposed to just condemning the movie or books - they will strengthen bonds with their teen and keep communication open. Decide together with your teen whether or not they should see the movie. If you are on the fence, go with your teen to see it and turn the experience into a teachable moment.

Common Sense Media is rating The Hunger Games 'pause' for age 13, which means 'it's a know your kids situation for preteens - especially since younger kids who have read the book may still be upset by the visceral teen-on-teen violence depicted on screen'. I wholeheartedly agree with their assessment.

Asking our community of parents: Are you allowing your younger teens to see The Hunger Games? Will you be seeing it first or going with them? Please share your thoughts, opinions and advice in the comments area.
