| | Teen Needs Constant Reminders, Parents Want to Stop Yelling A mom asks for advice: My son is very kind, considerate and mild mannered. The problem is he needs constant reminders to clear dishes from his room, empty his back pack, do homework and chores, get up on time you name it. He does nothing without being asked several times and often forgets to hand in homework. At least once a week my husband or I end up yelling at him out of frustration. I feel horrible for yelling as he tears up sometimes.
Denise's thoughts: It is frustrating when your teen doesn't act like things are important when they are. You know that he needs to get these things done, but he isn't buying into yet. And then, because it isn't as important to him as it should be, he forgets to do it. Add to the fact that he is growing and all the stress school is, he is probably extra tired and really would like to sleep in and relax.
There are things you can try, but lets help you with the yelling first. From your post you know that yelling doesn't do anything but hurt the both of you. You are yelling out of frustration, instead you need to step back and calm down, then tackle the problem together. When you are calm, say to him, "How can I help you get this done?"
Here are some resources that will help: Asking our parenting community: How are you able to get your teen to do what needs to be done? This is one Teen Idol I had high hopes for as a mom and still do. According to her representatives, the 18-year-old singer/actress is taking a break "in order to seek medical treatment for emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time." According to MTV, she is dealing with cutting, a self-harm activity some teens use to provide a temporary sense of relief from their pain, and an eating disorder. Her family is quoted in the MTV article saying that she had experienced bullying in school and has not been able to deal with what happened. Is your teen a fan of Demi's? If so, talk to them about this news and use the linked in resources to help. Let us know how it went in the comments area. | Parenting Book Review: The Good Son Parenting book review by a member of our parenting community, Michele Morley - thanks Michele!
