ADHD 13-year-old Son Just Getting By in School
A mom asks on the forum: "Thirteen year old son - bright, funny, ADHD challenged and absolutely refusing to do more than he needs to in order to squeak by. We've tried working towards a reward - he got the reward item and then immediately slacked off again. We've tried praise, we've tried loss of items or privileges, nothing seems to be working. Please, does anyone have any suggestions?

Another mom of an ADHD teen offers this sage advice: "ADHD kids either buy in or they don't. If they don't you can't drag them there, I know we have tried. If they buy in they can excel. As they age they tend to become more able to cope and stay on task.

Does your son have a stress ball or something that he can use to occupy his fidgety behavior in class? Have you tried to allow him to sit on a exercise ball instead of a chair. Also try getting him to set goals for himself and see what his dreams are, take it one step at a time, eventually they grow up.

My son is 15 he is not doing well in school but he is working a job and doing remarkably well, he has gone and gotten his lifeguard status so perhaps getting job skills of some kind will be the best you can do.

Also try sitting down with your child every day and doing homework. Other things are having a zipped homework binder that the homework can go in and be taken out of every day so that it does not get lost."

Asking our community of parents of teens: Do you have advice to offer this mom? Please share your thoughts, experiences and advice in the comments area.
