5 Steps to Talking With a Distressed Teen Over the Phone
Parents who are raising a troubled teen often have to deal with this difficult scenario: a child who calls emotionally upset, or in trouble due to poor choices they have made. Mental health professionals who treat adolescents are specifically trained in how to respond to a teen calling in crisis. Here's how parents can use these same techniques to respond effectively when an upset or angry teen is on the other end of the line.

Asking the parenting teens community: Has your teen called you in the middle of the night asking for a ride because their ride was too drunk or high to get them home? Or their date left them somewhere? Please share your advice and experiences in the comments area.

Teen Girl Drivers as Risky as the Boys
I found some interesting information in the news today, as it has always been thought that teenage boys were considered to be riskier drivers than teenage girls, but now that is changing. And it is changing in a real way when it comes to a parent's wallet! It seems insurance companies are starting to charge both teen boys and girls rates that are higher because teen girls are closing the gap when it comes to accident and driving risk statistics.

According to a study in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, by 2007, that gap had closed, with both male and female underage drunk drivers about 80 times more likely to get into an accident than a sober peer. Insurance companies have been on top of this, as a 2010 survey by insurance.com, which compiles rate quotes, found that insurance premiums for teenage girls have risen by about $500 over the past several years, while premiums for teenage boys have remained essentially flat. Thoughts?
