Marijuana is the Drug of Choice for Teen Drivers
A study(link on blog) done by Liberty Mutual and SADD, highlights a dangerous misconception by our teens, they don't consider marijuana use as a distraction to their driving. One in five teen drivers reports that they have driven under the influence of marijuana, that's 19%. To put this into perspective, think about this data that came from the same survey: 13% of teens surveyed reported that they have driven after drinking.

I thought it was telling that a teen's friend had quite a bit of power when it comes to whether or not a teen smoked marijuana before driving:
Friends do play a significant role, as most teen drivers say they would stop driving under the influence of marijuana (90 percent) or alcohol (94 percent) if asked by their passengers. Yet even teen passengers are seemingly less concerned about riding in a car with a driver who has used marijuana than with one who has used alcohol. While a significant majority (87 percent) of teen passengers would speak up and ask the driver to refrain from getting behind the wheel after drinking, only 72 percent of teen passengers would do the same for a driver who has used marijuana. Girls are far more likely to speak up to the driver than boys are in either circumstance.
I wonder if pot is being used by teens because it is harder to catch for parents and police? Or is it just easier for teens to get their hands on marijuana than alcohol? Share your thoughts, opinions and experiences in the comments area.

Racetrack Drivers Education, Is It for Your Teen?
This news article(link on blog) caught my eye and I was impressed with the topic, teens learning emergency driving. According to the article the day long class, which is held on a racetrack and costs $75, will teach "overconfident drivers to be more cautious and timid drivers will know how to keep control of their vehicles. Parents often notice the change in their children's driving on the way home." The article goes on to say:

"Drivers ed for the real world," is how instructor Bob Mondschein likes to describe the intense series of high-speed lessons in emergency driving. For eight hours, students learned to swerve quickly without over correcting, stop on a dime on soaking-wet pavement and keep control of their vehicles during high-speed swerves and turns.

Do you think this is the kind of driving class your teen needs? Share your thoughts in the comments area.
