From Denise Witmer, your Guide to Parenting Teens

Decide If You Really Need a Home Phone Number
As their kids get older and start to use cell phones, parents begin to see that having a home phone number is costly and unnecessary. When everyone in the family has their own phone number, the only people who call your house phone are people who have business with the head of the household. They can get a hold of you just as easily by calling your cell phone number.

Tips on how to turn off your landline:

  • Take a full month preparing everyone that your home phone number will be shut down in favor of everyone's cell phone numbers.
  • Talk to your family about when you will be shutting off your landline; give them a specific date.
  • Take some time and place all of your family's cell phone numbers in your phone. Ask your teenagers to do the same.
  • Check your cell phone plan and update it if there is a need.
  • Change your phone information with your creditors and banks.
  • Call your phone service and request your disconnect date.
